"Detour" around Eagle Lake

We were riding north from Susanville
on our way to Klamath Falls
Through high country pines
and stony steep canyon walls

Indian country to be sure
But much to our surprise
we were no way even ready
for the view bewyond the rise

From the top of the pass we marveled
at the expanse of Eagle Lake
Then looking down at the shore around
My knees began to quake

Far down below with teepee's galore
We spotted the whole Indian Race
We didn't know if they were friend or foe
So we decided to give them their space

As my partner watched from behind the rocks
I began to look for a detour
I said to the right of the rocks ahead
Is the only way for sure

We made it safely around
Keeping the lake on the left in view
then over the pass with town in sight
Its too late for them now to pursue

We told our tale to all that would listen
and everyone began to laugh
That nation of savages you saw
are as peaceful as a new born calf

Later we learned of the nation of Klamath
A people of industry and peace
So next time we'll be sure and stop by
trusting our worthless fears will cease.
