"Osprey with Fish"

This Osprey is a life size bird clutching a Trout. This carving has a 7' wingspan. The primary feathers, (big ones on the wing) are all made seperately and then inserted into the Bass wood. Same with the tail feathers. Great detail is given to carving, feathering and painting to look as realistic as possible. As you may or may not know, the Osprey falls into the water feet first to catch his fish, then flapping like crazy to get airborn, quickly grabs the fish with both sets of talons and makes sure the head is facing forward for aerodynamics. The Eagle on the other hand swoops and grabs with one claw and heads for shore to eat up.
The Osprey almost always heads back to the nest high up to feed his young, his mate or himself. This magnificant "Fish Hawk" was almost wiped out by the pesticide DDT before they figured out why the eggs were so thin shelled and were not surviving. It is a protected bird. They have been saved and are prospering once again. Whew! that was close!
We are privilegded to have many Osprey here in Oregon. In fact this summer while fishing with my son in Albany, One fell out of the sky right in front of us and came up with a nice fish. No, my line was not attached. ha.
